Dinner (non residents)- winter Wed-Sun - summer Mon-Sun | Modern European Restaurant, Traditional Inn The Samuel Fox at Bradwell in the picturesque Hope Valley is a country inn serving traditional and contemporary British and European cuisine. Since October 2012 the Samuel Fox has been in the hands of chef James Duckett who commenced his career in the kitchen of a small Michelin starred restaurant in Bordeaux and subsequently worked under such restaurant luminaries as Albert Roux, Michel Roux jnr., Marcus Wareing and Philip Howard. Two years as sous chef in one of Sydney’s leading restaurants, led to head chef appointments, first in the UK and then in a Spanish boutique hotel, followed by some seven years running his own restaurants both in Spain and the UK. The Samuel Fox is James first “pub” venture in which he brings together great food, comfortable accommodation, real ales and the warmest of welcomes in the heart of the Peak District National Park.
James’s lunches may comprise smoked salmon with beetroot and Clementine soup or rabbit terrine sitting alongside pub classics such as beer battered fish and chips and beef and ale pudding. Dinners may include, for example, Orkney crab soup with olive frazzle as a starter and herb crusted shoulder of hogget, artichokes, potatoes and cooking juices or pot roast partridge with black pudding, braised lentils and grain mustard sauce as mains. And on Sundays there’s a set price menu which is served all day and which always includes a traditional British roast together with, for example, tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and salsify, or roast fillet of plaice with chorizo, chickpeas and red wine. If desserts are your thing you’ll always find some traditional British puds, such as sticky toffee pudding with stout ice cream sitting alongside some more delicate offerings.
There’s always a couple of local real ales on tap as well as a good choice of fine wines and the Inn also has four extremely well appointed en-suite bedrooms. Close to Castleton, Hathersage, Edale and the Pennine Way, and within easy reach of Chatsworth, Matlock, the spa town of Buxton and the many historic houses run by English Heritage and the National Trust, the Samuel Fox is the perfect location for exploring Derbyshire’s Peak District National Park.
