Set in the heart of Whinlatter, England’s only mountain forest, The Cottage in the Wood commands stunning views of the Skiddaw mountain range and forest valley. “The Cottage” is a beautiful 17th-century travellers inn, that has been lovingly restored to reflect the tranquillity of this perfect location, and a contemporary boutique ambience. The quality of the food compelled Observer restaurant critic, Jay Rayner, to claim that the “stunning views and local Herdwick hogget” were “almost enough to make a man take up hill walking”. Head chef Chris Archer is a protégé of 2 Michelin-starred chef, Germaine Shwab, producing an innovative, contemporary menu which sources from the rich Cumbrian larder.
