Fish & Seafood Restaurant, Fishmonger

Located above Eddie Gilbert’s, the renowned Ramsgate fishmonger, is a new gourmet fish restaurant. Within six months of opening in 2007, Eddie Gilbert’s scooped a prestigious Taste of Kent Award for best fish retailer.

For owner Jonny Dunhill, who ran a wholesale shellfish business in London for 12 years, opening the restaurant is the fulfilment of a long-held ambition. Whilst supplying top London establishments as Le Gavroche, Harrods, The Ivy and Conran Restaurants, Jonny became inspired by the motivation of the talented chefs he met, many of who are now household names.

Eddie Gilbert’s head chef Craig Mather is a graduate of Thanet Catering College and Michelin trained at Mallory Court in Warwickshire where he worked for four years.

Although Eddie Gilbert’s serves excellent fish and chips, fried in a choice of beef dripping or vegetable oil, there is an inspired daily changing a la carte menu.

We Say

The well regularly updated menu will give you some difficulty choosing. This is a good thing; each dish being equally tempting. For example, crispy smoked eel soldiers with soft-boiled duck egg or fresh rock oysters with shallots and vinegar (these were particularly fine).

The restaurant is clean and simple with varnished floor boards and decor that invokes a maritime flavour. For a Wednesday the place seemed quite busy. Fish and seafood is the order of the day, however, they do have an option for meat-eaters. The fish and chips menu is also worth a look and you can mix items from this with the à la carte menu.

The food is excellent but not all of it was piping hot - which was a shame. The only other gripe was with the crème brûlée - butterscotch served with banana chutney - why do so many chefs feel they have to stamp their mark on this classic dish? Unadulterated crème brûlée is, in our opinion, far superior to the many dubious creations we have come across. Being fairly new on the scene, Eddie Gilbert’s already offers a unique experience in the area. Fresh local ingredients (and fresh fish from the fishmonger downstairs) are thoughtfully prepared and well presented. The option of choosing from the “gourmet fish and chips” menu is a nice touch. No doubt Eddie Gilbert’s will continue to improve. Definitely worth a visit; we don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
