Information on Canterbury, Kent
Canterbury is an ancient city dating back as far as 400AD and its history as simple settlement can be traced back even further. Canterbury Cathedral itself has been designated a World Heritage site.
Intersected by the River Stour, Canterbury is a pretty city full of antiquity. The large central shopping district is well laid out and closed to traffic during the day. Canterbury is alive with an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants, catering for every taste.
The city was one of the busiest places of medieval pilgrimage. In addition to the Cathedral, the Museum of Canterbury paints an historic picture of the city including Invicta, the engine that pulled the world's first passenger train and the locally created characters Bagpuss and Rupert the Bear. The Canterbury Tales Visitor Attraction revisits England in Chaucer's time and the shrine of the murdered archbishop, Thomas Becket.
